Project Description

The Construction Package 4 (CP-4) is the third significant construction contract executed on the Initial Operating Section of the high-speed rail program in California. The Project consists of a 22-mile stretch bounded by a point approximately one mile north of the Tulare/Kern County Line at the terminus of Construction Package 2-3 and Poplar Avenue to the south. The trackway is designed for a speed of 250 mph on a fully grade-separated alignment, and it is generally "at-grade" which generally consists of embankments six to ten feet above the surrounding ground with some localized areas approaching embankment heights of approximately 35 feet. The project also includes ten complex elevated sections for the high-speed train to cross over or under existing roadways, railroad main lines of BNSF and Amtrak, and watercourses including their designated floodplains.

Role & Responsibilities

During September 2016 – February 2018, Magnitvde oversaw and led the Detailed Design of the project produced by a team of several design consultants (Othon, LBG, Engloser, Sener, AMEC and JMA Civil) from preliminary bid design to final Ready for Construction (RFC) design and approval.

Magnitvde managed an internal design team at the contractor (CRB) level with one senior engineer assigned to each design discipline (trackway, roadway, drainage, structures, and geotech) to ensure that the submittals deadlines were met, the quality of the work was according to the California High Speed Rail Authority’s (Owner) technical requirements and CRB’s goals were achieved by finding the best technical solutions and optimizing the construction quantities of the Project.

Magnitvde also served as the design liaison between CRB, the Owner (California High Speed Rail Authority) and the different stakeholders involved in the design of the Project: Caltrans, BNSF, City of Wasco, Kern County, CPUC and Amtrak.
